How we research

Last updated 14 Oct 2026

Specs

We take specs only from the manufacturer's page (the Australian site where there is one) or an Australian store's product page, and we link the source next to each figure. If a figure isn't published, we show "Not stated". We never estimate a missing spec. When a page gives battery amp-hours and volts but not watt-hours, we multiply them and note that we did.

Where a brand sells a road-legal version and a "performance" or "off-road" version of the same bike, we list them as separate models with separate compliance status.

Compliance

  • EN 15194: marked "Meets EN 15194" only when the manufacturer or a store states compliance. We mark "Does not meet" when the specs exceed the standard (over 250 W rated power, assistance above 25 km/h, or a throttle above 6 km/h) or the maker says so. Everything else is "Unknown".
  • Road-legal as a bicycle: "Yes" only with a stated EN 15194 compliance. "No" when the specs exceed the pedelec limits or the model is sold for off-road or private-property use.
  • NSW certification: checked against the NSW Government's certified product list. Until we've checked, we say so.

Note that EN 15194 compliance is self-declared by importers. A stated compliance is the best public information available, not a guarantee. More on the rules

Prices

  • We record prices from Australian stores over time. Each record is kept permanently. We never edit history, and we never record a price we didn't see.
  • We only collect prices automatically from stores whose terms and robots.txt allow it, at no more than one request per second, with a bot name that says who we are. Other prices come from store data feeds or are checked by hand.
  • Anomaly guard: if a price changes by more than 40% in one check, or an e-bike shows under $200, we hold that price for review and leave it out of "lowest price" figures until a person approves it.

Price labels

  • Lowest in 90 days means the current lowest in-stock price is at or below the lowest we've seen in the last 90 days.
  • Good price means it's within 3% of that 90-day low.
  • We don't show either label until we have at least 14 days of price history for the model.
  • The deals page ranks drops against each model's 90-day median price, not against a "was" price a store chose.

Editorial

The "Our verdict" sections are researched from published information and approved by our editor, Grian Myers, before they appear. We say plainly when we haven't ridden a bike, and we don't publish ratings or test results we don't have.
