Editor's take
Our verdict
A retro electric road scooter with two portable Powerpacks and dual-channel ABS, the cheapest FONZ model here.
Who it's for
Riders wanting a registrable scooter with batteries they can carry inside to charge; a licence, registration and CTP apply, and FONZ includes rego, stamp duty and CTP in the ride-away price. It needs a motorcycle rider licence and is learner approved. FONZ says it can be ridden on a car licence in NT, QLD, SA and WA when limited to 50 km/h (moped class).
Alternatives
The FONZ Z Series SR is faster for more money, and the Talaria Sting Pro MX5 L1E is a road-registrable e-moto at a similar price.
Strengths
- Two portable 11 kg Powerpacks charge from a normal outlet
- Claimed up to 130 km in Eco mode
- Dual-channel ABS with 190 mm hydraulic discs and regen
- Ride-away price includes rego, stamp duty and CTP
Drawbacks
- Range drops to about 72 km at full power
- FONZ doesn't say whether the 9.1 kW figure is peak or rated
- 90 km/h top speed, below the Z Series SR
- About 4 hours for a full charge

- Stated by the maker or its Australian distributor. Source: fonzmoto.com.au.
An unregistered e-moto can only be ridden on private land with the owner's permission, or at a track or park that allows it. Riding one on roads, footpaths, bike paths or parks risks fines, and in some states the bike can be seized.
Note: FONZ sells it ride-away with local registration, stamp duty and CTP included. Licence: motorcycle rider licence, learner approved. Rideable on a car licence in NT, QLD, SA and WA when speed-limited to 50 km/h (moped class).
